The Schenectady Armory, built in 1936 for the 105th Infantry Regiment, is an historic Art Deco-style brick masonry building designed by architect William E. Haugaard, New York State Architect, 1928-1944. The building consists of 65,000 square feet on 1.9 acres of land in the heart of Schenectady. Haugaard designed a total of 12 armories statewide during his tenure as State Architect. His prototypical design is similar in layout to earlier armories, consisting mainly of an administrative section for offices and a drill hall for practicing military maneuvers.
Although no longer keeping with the needs of the twenty-first century military, the armory’s massive size opens its future to myriad possibilities, including trade shows and conventions, or indoor sports or recreational facilities.
